WARITHANG ELEMENTARY RESIDENTIAL ORPHANAGE

Background

There are a number of semi orphans and orphans who need our help. Nor do they have enough clothing or shelter to protect them from the extremely cold weather of Tibet. Since they do not have any means to support themselves, these children cannot afford to go to school. They are offered education which would provide them a source of employment and sustenance when they become adults. The dream of an orphanage is now a reality Lama Karma Gyurmey recruited orphans from all over Tibet and Aug 01, 2005 opened the Orphanage with 20 kids who have lost either one or both parents. At present there are 200 orphans at the Elementary/Residential Orphanage. About half of the orphans are semi orphans and half of the orphanage are full orphans. There are many more in waiting list if space was permitting. They are taught not only the 3R’s but also sciences so that when the kids grow up they can compete with the rest of the world. Computer classes will be given. The curriculum will also have Tibetan and the major Tibetan traditions and cultures. This will enable the children to understand what their culture is and have a firmer appreciation of what they can offer to the well being of the society. This will infuse a sense of pride and well-being in their tender minds and would be great contribution to the community where they live.

The dreams for the future

The Lama has built a hospitals and will be opened in August, 2010 that could provide health and sanitation needs to many villagers. In cases of medical emergencies, families have to walk for at least half a day to few days just to get to the nearest hospital. The health clinic has been built with 60 beds that will cater to easily manageable minor emergencies. This will provide basic medical care and health informations to the Villages as well as to the Orphanage for those who cannot afford the medical and surgical expenses. This could save many lives. At present hospital is not equipped yet such as beds, all kinds of medical equipments, Staff (doctors, nurses, cleaners, etc). WE NEED ALL YOUR SUPPORTS .

At present this is an urgent need for a new dormitory for new kids admission that come to the orphanage every year. Our future goal is to open a shop at the main market that will provide a source of income for the orphanage so that in the years to come they will not have to be dependent on the generosity of others. Also, the money raised from the sale of the goods will be used to pay for the expenses incurred in running the Orphanage - Kitchen, Residences, Classrooms and the Health Clinic. Economics dictate that once people have the necessary disposable income – achieved through a steady stream of salaries for their artistic skills – they will spend the money in the village and have a multiplier effect on the general well-being of the village as a whole. This will have enormous ramifications for the school, health clinic and the shop The income received from the shop will be used to develop and expand the school’s projects. In addition, the proceeds from the sale of arts and crafts made by the locals will enable the project to be completely self reliant thereby overcoming the major hurdle of funding in the future. More importantly, it will help wean the locals away from the paradoxes of foreign aid as well.
